"a home away from home"

Talofa Lava ROKSA

With the utmost respect to Brothers and Sisters that are frequent visitors to our ROKSA website, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tuileama Toatolu Nua from Tau Manua. I am a former, and the first President of ROKSA, October 2004 - September 2005. I was stationed in South Korea from July 2001 until September 2006. I wish to extend my sincere appreciation with great admiration for all those who contributed to ROKSA’s continued success.

With that in mind, I would not dare claim any credit, except those who spent long hours and personal time paving the foundation for ROKSA. I elect not to mention names or persons for the concern that I might unintentionally leave out some dedicated folks that played major roles to our cause.  A vision of a “Home Away From Home” for our young Soldiers surfaced during one of many routine gathering of friends at my home in Seoul, South Korea, with some hope of making our young Uso’s and Tuafafines feel at home; this was around November 2003.

Just like any new idea or project, convincing everyone to endorse and support such cause took much effort than anticipated. There was much opposition from some members due to reasons of their own. Despite such hurdles, the elected Committee proceeded with about 80% of our island folks, both Active Duty Soldiers and Retirees. ROKSA absorbed tremendous criticism and name calling from some of our Samoan brothers on island and abroad due to their lack of understanding, or how I would described it as, lack of expectation that such type of Samoan Association would emerge from the heart of South Korea’s capital.  Courageous members of ROKSA stood their ground, and eventually won the hearts and minds of our people. And now, you know the rest of the story.

In the military, at least my experience, when the balloon goes up, the primary plan goes out the window. With that being said, on behalf of all those former and current ROKSAs that made South Korea their home away from home in support of the Global War on Terrorism, hence forth, I step forward as their shield. Protecting ROKSA members from those who make it their life time commitment to bad mouth its members; I welcome with great respect those who have issues or concerns. I can be reached at cell: (910) 364-2722, or email: tuinua@hotmail.com. By doing this, it will allow ROKSA to focus on its annual agenda with little or no outside interference.
